Maliq & D'Essentials

Maliq & D'Essentials is an Indonesian band from Jakarta formed in 2002, blending soul, jazz, funk and R&B with contemporary pop sensibilities. Led by vocalist Angga Puradiredja and drummer Widi Puradiredja, the group built its early reputation performing at Jakarta clubs and lounges before gaining wider recognition through appearances at the Java Jazz Festival starting in 2005.

The band's sound is distinguished by rich vocal harmonies, live instrumentation and a fluid mix of Indonesian and English lyrics, a combination that set them apart from more conventional Indonesian pop acts. Their music draws on classic soul and funk traditions while staying rooted in contemporary songwriting, giving tracks like «Dia», «Himalaya» and «Terdiam» a warm, organic feel.

Over the years Maliq & D'Essentials became one of the most respected acts in Indonesia's urban and soul-pop scene, influencing a generation of local musicians drawn to more sophisticated, instrument-driven pop. Songs such as «Pilihanku», «Menari» and «Kita Bikin Romantis» remain staples of their catalog and helped cement their reputation as pioneers of Indonesian soul music.
