M83

M83 is a French electronic and dream-pop project formed in Antibes in 2001 by Anthony Gonzalez, initially alongside co-founder Nicolas Fromageau, who departed after the band's second album. Gonzalez has remained the group's sole permanent member and creative driving force since, shaping M83's sound around lush synthesizers, cinematic scale, and shoegaze-influenced atmospherics, with vocals often used as texture rather than a lyrical focal point.

The project's name references the spiral galaxy Messier 83, reflecting the vast, cosmic quality of its music, which draws on shoegaze's heavy use of reverb while relying far less on guitar than typical genre acts. M83 built a devoted following through albums like Before the Dawn Heals Us and Saturdays = Youth before achieving mainstream crossover success with 2011's double album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, anchored by the breakout single «Midnight City», which became a defining anthem of early-2010s electronic pop.

Beyond the hit singles, M83's catalog spans ambient instrumental pieces, sweeping instrumentals like «Outro» and «Intro», and moodier tracks such as «Wait» and «Oblivion», the latter also serving as the title track for a 2013 film score Gonzalez composed. The project has continued to work extensively in film and television scoring, cementing its reputation as one of contemporary electronic music's most cinematic acts.
