Lou Bega

Lou Bega, born David Lubega Balemezi in Munich in 1975, is a German singer of Ugandan and Sicilian descent who became a global pop phenomenon at the end of the 1990s. His breakthrough single «Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of...)» (1999), a reworking of Pérez Prado's 1949 mambo instrumental with new sung verses, became one of the biggest crossover hits of the era, topping charts across Europe and reaching high positions worldwide.

Bega's sound sits at the crossroads of Latin big-band mambo, swing and late-90s pop-dance production, a style he continued to mine on his debut album «A Little Bit of Mambo» and follow-up singles such as «I Got a Girl» and «Tricky, Tricky». He later leaned further into novelty and family-friendly territory with tracks like the «Disney Mambo #5» and the theme song for the animated series about Marsupilami, «Up and down all around».

Though he never repeated the scale of his signature hit, Lou Bega remained active in German and European entertainment, releasing further albums and singles such as «Boyfriend» and «Sweet Like Cola», and is remembered chiefly as the artist who brought mambo-flavored dance-pop to mainstream global radio at the turn of the millennium.
