He began rapping at age nine and sent a demo tape to record labels as a teenager, catching the attention of the fledgling Def Jam Recordings, where he worked with founders Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin. His 1984 debut single «I Need a Beat» sold over 100,000 copies and helped Def Jam secure a major distribution deal with Columbia Records.

His debut album Radio (1985) went platinum, powered by hits like «I Can't Live Without My Radio» and «Rock the Bells», establishing him as a hardcore rap innovator.
