About the artist
Little Feat are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1969 by singer-guitarist Lowell George, previously of the Mothers of Invention, alongside bassist Roy Estrada, keyboardist Bill Payne, and drummer Richie Hayward. The group became known for blending rock with blues, funk, New Orleans-style R&B, and country influences into a loose, groove-driven sound that resisted easy genre classification and earned them a devoted cult following and deep respect among fellow musicians.
George’s slide guitar work and songwriting, epitomized by tracks like «Willin’» and «Dixie Chicken», gave the band its early identity, while Bill Payne’s piano and keyboard contributions added jazz and funk textures that expanded the group’s sonic palette on records such as Time Loves a Hero. Their live shows, built around extended improvisation and tight ensemble interplay, became legendary among rock and jam-band audiences alike.
Lowell George’s death in 1979 marked a turning point for the band, which went on hiatus before reforming in the 1980s with Payne and other members continuing to tour and record for decades afterward. Songs such as «Fat Man in the Bathtub», «Spanish Moon», and «Roll Um Easy» remain staples of their catalog, reflecting a musical legacy built on eclecticism, virtuosic musicianship, and Southern-rock-adjacent storytelling.
