Lingua Ignota

Lingua Ignota was the recording project of Kristin Hayter, an experimental musician from Providence, Rhode Island, whose work fused noise, power electronics, liturgical and modern classical music into something singular and confrontational. Trained classically and formerly a doctoral candidate and lecturer at Brown University, Hayter drew directly on academic and religious frameworks — sacred music, ritual, scripture — to build a body of work centered on themes of domestic violence, trauma, retribution, and religion.

Her voice moved between operatic clarity and shattering screams, often layered over dense electronic noise, piano, and orchestral or choral textures, creating music that felt as much like ritual as performance. Albums such as 2017’s All Bitches Die, 2019’s CALIGULA, and 2021’s SINNER GET READY — the latter incorporating Appalachian folk instrumentation and drawing on her time in rural Pennsylvania — traced an evolving, increasingly ambitious sonic and thematic arc, with songs like «DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR» and «PENNSYLVANIA FURNACE» exemplifying her fusion of the sacred and the brutal.

In December 2022, Hayter announced the retirement of the Lingua Ignota project after a farewell tour, citing the emotional toll of performing material so closely bound to her own trauma. She now records under the name Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter.
