About the artist
Lesley Gore was an American pop singer who became a teenage star in the early 1960s. Born on May 2, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, she rose to fame at just seventeen with «It’s My Party», a chart-topping single produced by the legendary Quincy Jones that captured the emotional dramas of adolescence with a sound that defined the era’s girl-group pop.
Gore followed that breakthrough with a string of hits including «Judy’s Turn to Cry» and the buoyant «Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows», cementing her place as one of the most successful young female vocalists of the pre-British Invasion pop landscape. Her most enduring song, however, proved to be «You Don’t Own Me», a defiant declaration of independence that has since been embraced as an early feminist anthem and remains a touchstone in discussions of women’s autonomy in popular music.
Beyond her recording career, Gore lived as an openly gay woman, coming out publicly in 2004 though she had never truly concealed her identity; her longtime partner was Lois Sasson. She continued performing and writing music for decades after her initial fame, and her influence persisted well beyond the 1960s pop charts. Lesley Gore died on February 16, 2015, in New York, leaving behind a catalog that remains a foundational text of American pop.
