Laura Marling

Laura Marling, born 1 February 1990 in Berkshire, England, is one of the most acclaimed British singer-songwriters of her generation, working in a lineage of English folk and folk-rock songwriting. She began performing live from age 16 and released her debut album, Alas, I Cannot Swim, in 2008, just days after turning eighteen; it was nominated for the Mercury Prize and featured «Ghosts», which became one of her most enduring songs. Before establishing her solo career, she played with Noah and the Whale and was linked to that band's frontman Charlie Fink, as well as later to Mumford & Sons' Marcus Mumford.

Across seven studio albums released by 2020, including Short Movie and Song For Our Daughter, Marling has built a body of work marked by intricate acoustic guitar playing, literary and often introspective lyricism, and a voice that shifts between hushed intimacy and folk-rock assurance. Songs such as «Soothing», «Wild Fire» and «Rambling Man» reflect her range, from atmospheric, almost art-pop production to more traditional singer-songwriter arrangements rooted in British and American folk traditions.

Marling is widely regarded as a defining voice of the 2000s–2010s British folk revival, praised for the consistency and evolution of her songwriting from album to album, each one exploring distinct thematic and sonic territory while retaining her characteristic lyrical depth.
