Kraftwerk

Kraftwerk are a German electronic music band formed in Düsseldorf in 1970 by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider. Widely regarded as pioneers of electronic music, they were instrumental in shaping the sound of synthpop, techno, house and electro, with their minimalist, mechanized aesthetic and vocoder-processed vocals becoming a blueprint for generations of artists across genres, including hip hop, where their music was famously sampled by acts from Afrika Bambaataa to Jay-Z.

The band's classic lineup crystallized in the mid-1970s with the release of Autobahn, whose title track became an international breakthrough. They followed it with a string of highly influential albums, refining a stripped-down, futuristic sound built around synthesizers, drum machines and themes of technology, transportation and modern life. Landmark tracks such as «The Robots», «Computer Love», «Tour de France», «Radioactivity» and «Trans-Europe Express», along with «Das Model» (released internationally as «The Model»), remain touchstones of electronic music history.

Kraftwerk's live performances, built around their audiovisual concept and iconic red-and-black stage presence, reinforced their image as both musicians and multimedia artists. Founding member Florian Schneider left the band in 2008 and passed away on April 21, 2020, after a battle with cancer, with his death announced on May 6, 2020. Kraftwerk's influence remains foundational to virtually every branch of contemporary electronic music.
