About the artist
Kishore Kumar, born Abhas Kumar Ganguly in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, was one of the most influential playback singers in the history of Indian cinema. Beginning his career in the 1940s, he rose through the golden and post-golden eras of Bollywood to become the definitive voice of leading actors for decades, admired for his effortless yodeling, comic timing, and an uncanny ability to shift between tender romantic phrasing and playful, almost theatrical delivery within the same song.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who trained formally in classical music, Kishore Kumar was largely self-taught, and this gave his singing a loose, spontaneous quality that set him apart. He recorded extensively for composers across generations, lending his voice to countless film heroes and helping define the sound of Hindi film music from the 1950s through the 1980s. His catalogue includes songs like «Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas», «Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana», and «Neele Neele Ambar Par», each showcasing a different facet of his range, from wistful melancholy to buoyant joy.
Beyond Hindi, he recorded in Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, and several other Indian languages, and also acted in and directed films. His Bengali non-film recordings remain considered classics in their own right. Widely honored during his lifetime and after, he is remembered as a singer whose voice became inseparable from the emotional identity of Indian popular cinema.
