Kero Kero Bonito

Kero Kero Bonito, often shortened to KKB, is a British band from London formed by vocalist Sarah Midori Perry alongside producers Gus Lobban and Jamie Bulled. The group's name derives from Japanese onomatopoeia for a frog's croak combined with a word for a type of fish, hinting at the playful, cross-cultural sensibility that has defined their music since the beginning.

Early on, the band built a distinctive electropop sound blending J-pop, dancehall and video game music influences, with Perry singing and rapping in both Japanese and English over bright, often Casio SA-45-produced instrumentals, as heard on tracks like «Flamingo» and «Sick Beat». Following their TOTEP EP, the group's sound shifted toward a more shoegaze-oriented direction, and their 2018 album Time 'n' Place pushed further into indie rock, bedroom pop and experimental pop textures, marking a clear evolution from their earlier, brighter pop-oriented material.

Beyond their work as a trio, each member maintains an active solo career: Perry works as a visual artist, Lobban produces under his own name as well as the alias Kane West, and Bulled records as Wharfwhit. This individual creative output alongside the group's willingness to shift genres between releases has made Kero Kero Bonito a distinctive presence in British indie and alternative pop, resistant to easy categorization.
