About the artist
Kelvin Momo, born Thato Kelvin Ledwaba on August 9, 1994, is a South African DJ, producer and songwriter from Diepkloof, Soweto. He is widely regarded as one of the key architects of «Private School Amapiano», a smoother, jazz-inflected strand of the genre defined by subtle grooves, emotional depth and musical sophistication rather than the genre's more dancefloor-oriented side. His father's love of jazz shaped his ear from an early age, feeding into a sound that blends soul, deep house and layered storytelling.
Momo's debut album, «Momo's Private School» (2020), introduced this refined approach, and though it initially reached a smaller audience, it built his reputation among connoisseurs of the sound. Follow-up projects, including «Ivy League» (2021) and «Amukelani» (2022), brought him wider national recognition, while «Kurhula» (2023) won Best Amapiano Album at the South African Music Awards, cementing his status as one of the genre's leading producers.
He frequently collaborates with vocalists such as Babalwa M, MaWhoo and MKeyz, and his catalogue includes tracks like «Bo Gogo», «Vulani», «Waze Wamuhle» and «Emhlabeni». Through this body of work, Kelvin Momo has helped push amapiano toward a more introspective, soulful register, influencing how the genre is perceived beyond the club.
