Ka

Ka, born Kaseem Ryan, was an American rapper and producer from Brownsville, Brooklyn, who built one of the most distinctive bodies of work in underground hip-hop while working a full career as a New York City firefighter. He began rapping in the early 1990s with the group Natural Elements under the alias K.A., later forming Nightbreed with Oddbrawl, before stepping away from music to join the FDNY, where he eventually rose to the rank of captain.

Ka returned to rapping with the self-released «Iron Works» in 2008, an album meant only for friends and family that unexpectedly reached GZA of Wu-Tang Clan and led to a feature on «Firehouse». From there he developed a singular style: sparse, often percussion-free beats he produced himself, delivered in a hushed, deliberate cadence built on dense internal rhyme and literary allusion. His music explicitly revived the spirit of early-1990s New York hip-hop, favoring pain, struggle and craft over spectacle.

His catalog — including songs like «Conflicted», «Sins of the Father», «Just», «Mourn at Night» and «Solitude of Enoch» — is known for thematic albums exploring family, faith, mortality and the history of his neighborhood. In 2016 he drew unwanted attention when tabloid coverage of his rap career and his firefighting job collided, which paradoxically widened his audience and cemented his reputation as one of underground rap's most respected, uncompromising voices.
