Julie Covington is an English singer and actress best known for originating the role of Eva Perón in the 1976 concept album of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical Evita, where her recording of «Don't Cry for Me Argentina» became a UK number-one single and a defining moment of 1970s musical theatre. Her interpretation, alongside tracks like «Buenos Aires» and «Rainbow High», set the template for how the role would be sung on stage, even though Covington herself chose not to appear in the subsequent West End production.

Before and alongside her Evita fame, Covington was closely associated with British television drama through the series Rock Follies, in which she played a member of a fictional all-female rock band; songs from the show, delivered in a distinctive theatrical-pop style, became hits in their own right and showcased her expressive, stage-trained vocal delivery.
