Joyous Celebration

Joyous Celebration is a South African gospel choir and music collective formed in 1994, in the wake of the country's first democratic elections — a moment of hope that shaped the group's founding spirit. What began as a one-off studio recording project became an ongoing platform showcasing rotating lineups of South African vocalists, many of whom went on to solo careers, making the group as much an institution and a launching pad as a fixed act.

Musically, Joyous Celebration performs contemporary African gospel — rich massed choral harmonies, call-and-response singing, and arrangements that draw on South African traditions alongside modern gospel and worship styles, often sung in isiZulu, Sesotho, and other South African languages as well as English. Their live-recorded albums, built around large-scale concert performances, are a hallmark of their format and have made them a dominant force in African gospel music.

With a long-running series of numbered annual albums, Joyous Celebration is one of South Africa's most prolific and successful gospel outfits, standing alongside groups like Soweto Gospel Choir as ambassadors of South African gospel music both on the continent and internationally.
