José José

José José, born José Rómulo Sosa Ortiz, was a Mexican singer widely regarded as one of the most important romantic vocalists in Latin American popular music. Nicknamed El Príncipe de la Canción (The Prince of Song), he rose to international fame after his performance of «El Triste» at the 1970 Festival de la Canción Latina, where the emotional power of his voice earned him lasting recognition even though the song placed third. Over a career spanning five decades he became a defining figure of the Latin pop-balada tradition, known for a rich, dramatic baritone capable of both restrained tenderness and powerful, almost operatic climaxes.

His catalog includes some of the most enduring songs in Spanish-language pop, such as «Gavilán o Paloma», «El Amar y El Querer», «La Nave del Olvido», and «Almohada». He worked with leading arrangers and producers of the Latin pop era and released more than thirty studio albums, moving fluidly between orchestral ballads, bolero-influenced pieces, and more contemporary pop production as tastes shifted across the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.
