Johnny Mercer

Johnny Mercer was one of the most prolific and celebrated American lyricists of the twentieth century, credited with writing lyrics to more than 1,500 songs across a forty-year career. Born into a prominent Southern family, he became a central figure in the Great American Songbook, pairing his witty, colloquial lyrics with melodies from many of the era's leading composers.

His standards range from the playful, such as «Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive» and «I'm an Old Cowhand», to the deeply wistful, exemplified by «Moon River» and «Dream». «Personality» and «Lulu's Back In Town» further showed his gift for capturing everyday American vernacular in memorable, singable phrases, while «Blues in the Night» revealed his ability to channel jazz and blues idioms into mainstream popular song.

Mercer collaborated extensively with composers such as Henry Mancini and Harold Arlen, and his lyrics were recorded by nearly every major vocalist of his generation. Over his career he earned eighteen Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars for Best Original Song, cementing his legacy as one of the defining voices of American popular songwriting.
