Johnny Mandel

Johnny Mandel was an American composer, arranger, and trombonist celebrated for his work in film, television, and jazz. Born in 1925 in New York City, he began as a big-band musician before moving into arranging and scoring for Hollywood in the 1950s and 60s. His most enduring work is the theme from M*A*S*H, titled «Suicide Is Painless», written for Robert Altman's 1970 film and later used for the long-running television series.

Mandel's writing blended sophisticated jazz harmony with cinematic sweep, making him a favorite among vocalists and instrumentalists alike. His ballad «The Shadow of Your Smile», from the film The Sandpiper, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became a jazz standard recorded by countless artists. He also composed «Emily», another widely covered standard admired for its lush, wistful melody.

Over a career spanning decades, Mandel collaborated with major names in jazz and popular music, contributing arrangements and scores that bridged the worlds of orchestral film music and improvisational jazz.
