About the artist
Johnny Hallyday, born Jean-Philippe Smet in Paris, was the towering figure of French rock and roll, active from the late 1950s until his death on 6 December 2017. Discovering American rock through Elvis Presley and Gene Vincent, he brought that raw energy into the French chanson tradition, becoming the country's first true rock idol and a cultural icon whose career spanned six decades.
His sound evolved constantly, moving from early rockabilly-tinged hits through orchestral pop ballads, hard rock, and R&B-inflected material, always anchored by his booming, theatrical voice and larger-than-life stage presence. Songs like «Que je t'aime», «L'envie», and «Marie» showcase his gift for dramatic, emotionally charged delivery, while «Les portes du pénitencier» (his adaptation of «House of the Rising Sun») and «Allumer le feu» reveal his rock roots.
Over his career Hallyday amassed dozens of gold and platinum records and several diamond certifications, releasing around 50 studio albums and nearly 30 live records — a body of work unmatched in French popular music. He remains a defining reference point for rock music in the francophone world, and his death prompted a national outpouring of mourning.
