John Michael Talbot

John Michael Talbot is an American singer-songwriter and Franciscan brother widely regarded as a pioneer of contemporary Catholic worship music. Before turning to sacred music, he was a member of the country-rock band Mason Proffit in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After a period of spiritual searching that led him through various religious traditions, he embraced Catholicism and eventually founded a monastic community, the Brothers and Sisters of Charity, living for decades at Little Portion Hermitage in Arkansas.

His music blends folk, acoustic guitar, and classical instrumentation with liturgical texts and Scripture, creating a meditative, prayerful style that helped define modern Catholic liturgical music alongside composers like the St. Louis Jesuits. Songs such as «Be Not Afraid», «Holy Is His Name», and «Here I Am, Lord» became staples in Catholic parishes worldwide, sung at Masses, weddings, and religious gatherings.

Over a career spanning several decades, Talbot has released dozens of albums and is considered one of the best-selling Catholic recording artists in history.
