John Maus

John Maus, born February 23, 1980, is an American musician, composer, and academic whose music blends vintage synthesizer textures with melodic influences from medieval church modes and 1980s goth-pop. Emerging from the lo-fi cassette underground in the late 2000s, his early recordings—made largely with a four-track recorder and dated synth soundbanks—are often cited as precursors to the hypnagogic pop and synth-revival movements that followed.

Maus built a devoted following through albums that pair icy, minor-key synth-pop with unusually literate, sometimes political lyrics, on songs such as «Hey Moon», «Quantum Leap», and «Believer». His live performances are known for their physical intensity, as he sings and gestures with visible emotional abandon over pre-recorded backing tracks, a contrast to the austere, machine-driven sound of his records.

Beyond music, Maus has an academic background in philosophy and political science, having taught philosophy and later earning a doctorate, which has fed into the conceptually dense, sometimes confrontational themes of his songwriting. He has also collaborated with and influenced artists in the synth-pop and hypnagogic pop scenes, cementing his reputation as one of the more idiosyncratic figures to emerge from that underground.
