João Gilberto

João Gilberto (1931–2019) was a Brazilian singer, guitarist and composer from Juazeiro, Bahia, widely regarded as the father of bossa nova. He developed a distinctive, softly syncopated guitar style — a whispered, understated vocal delivery paired with intricate rhythmic strumming that reimagined samba for an intimate, jazz-inflected setting. His 1959 album Chega de Saudade, built on songs by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, is considered the founding statement of the genre.

Gilberto's influence spread internationally through his 1963 collaboration with American saxophonist Stan Getz, Getz/Gilberto, which introduced bossa nova to a global audience and became one of the best-selling jazz records of its era. Songs like «Desafinado» and «Corcovado» became standards, covered across jazz and popular music for decades afterward.

He spent long stretches of his life outside Brazil, including years in the United States, while remaining a deeply private and famously perfectionist artist. His minimalist aesthetic — voice, guitar, almost nothing else — left a lasting imprint on Brazilian and international popular music, influencing generations of musicians who followed the bossa nova path he helped open.
