Joan Sebastian

Joan Sebastian, born José Manuel Figueroa in Juliantla, Guerrero, Mexico, was one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters in the history of regional Mexican music. Over a career spanning more than three decades he wrote hundreds of songs, many of them ranchera and banda standards recorded by other major artists across Latin music.

His songwriting combined rural Mexican tradition with a distinctly personal, often autobiographical voice, and he moved comfortably between ranchera, banda, and pop-tinged ballads, giving his catalog unusual range for the genre. Songs like «Secreto de Amor» and «Eso y Más» became genre-defining hits, and his melodic, storytelling approach made him a reference point for generations of Mexican composers.

He was also a successful actor and, notably, an accomplished charro and horseman, elements that fed into his public image and his music's themes of rural Mexican identity. Recognized with multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, he remained commercially dominant until his death from cancer in 2015, at which point he still held multiple albums and singles at the top of the Billboard Latin charts — a testament to his enduring popularity.
