About the artist
Joan Armatrading, MBE, born Joan Anita Barbara Armatrading on 9 December 1950, is a British singer-songwriter and guitarist widely regarded as one of the most distinctive voices in UK popular music. Known for her deep, expressive contralto and inventive acoustic and electric guitar playing, she has spent decades blending folk, rock, pop, R&B, and jazz influences into a highly personal songwriting style.
Her catalogue spans classics such as «Love and Affection», «Down to Zero», «Me Myself I», «Willow», and «The Weakness in Me», tracks that showcase her ability to move between intimate balladry and more upbeat, groove-driven material. «Drop the Pilot» and «More Than One Kind of Love» further reflect the versatility that made her a consistent presence on UK charts through the late 1970s and 1980s.
A three-time Grammy Award nominee and two-time BRIT Award nominee for Best Female Artist, Armatrading also received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996, recognition of a songwriting career built on emotional honesty and musical independence. As one of the first Black British women to achieve major success as a singer-songwriter in the UK, she remains an influential and respected figure whose work bridges folk-rooted storytelling with soulful, genre-spanning production.
