Jimmie Rodgers

Jimmie Rodgers (1897–1933) is widely regarded as the father of country music. Born in Meridian, Mississippi, he grew up around the railroad where his father worked, absorbing the blues and work songs of the yard alongside the folk and hillbilly traditions of the rural South, and worked himself as a brakeman before tuberculosis forced him off the rails and into music.

Discovered by producer Ralph Peer during the legendary 1927 Bristol sessions in Tennessee, Rodgers quickly became one of the first true stars of recorded country music. His distinctive blue yodel, first heard on «Blue Yodel No. 1 (T for Texas)», fused blues phrasing with a hillbilly voice in a way no one had done before, creating a sound that was as much rooted in African American blues as in Appalachian and Western folk music.

Over a career cut tragically short by illness, he recorded enduring songs such as «Waiting for a Train», «In the Jailhouse Now», and «Blue Yodel No. 8 (Mule Skinner Blues)», establishing the singing brakeman persona and the train, drifter, and outlaw themes that would shape country music for generations. He died in 1933 during a recording session in New York, but his influence on virtually every country and roots musician who followed remains foundational.
