Jean Sibelius

Jean Sibelius was a Finnish composer widely regarded as the most important figure in Finnish classical music history. Working primarily in the late Romantic and early 20th-century tradition, he became closely associated with the rise of Finnish national identity during the country's period of Russian rule and eventual independence.

His output centers on orchestral music: seven symphonies that trace an evolution from lush late-Romantic writing toward increasingly compressed, organic forms, alongside the Violin Concerto and the tone poem «Finlandia», which became an unofficial anthem of Finnish nationhood. His music is marked by long melodic lines, stark orchestral textures evoking the northern landscape, and a distinctive handling of form that influenced later symphonists.

After completing his Seventh Symphony and the tone poem «Tapiola» in the late 1920s, Sibelius entered a prolonged creative silence, producing no further major works for the remaining three decades of his life and reportedly destroying manuscripts he considered unworthy of his legacy. He remains a towering figure in the orchestral repertoire and a symbol of Finnish cultural identity.
