About the artist
Jason Robert Brown, born June 20, 1970 in Ossining, New York, is an American composer, lyricist, and orchestrator widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in contemporary musical theatre. He emerged in the 1990s with Songs for a New World, a song cycle that showcased his distinctive fusion of theatrical storytelling with pop, R&B, gospel, and jazz-inflected harmonic language, setting the template for much of his later work.
His breakthrough as a book-musical composer came with Parade in 1998, a historically grounded drama that earned him a Tony Award for Best Original Score, followed by The Last Five Years in 2001, an intimate two-hander told through interlocking, non-linear timelines that has become one of the most performed contemporary musicals in regional and school theatre. His songs, including «Still Hurting» and «I Could Be in Love With Someone Like You», are prized for their intricate piano writing and emotionally raw lyricism.
Brown continued to expand his catalog with works like 13, The Bridges of Madison County, and Urban Cowboy, alongside solo recordings such as Someone Else's Clothes. He is also known for performing his own material live as a singer-pianist, and his songs have become a staple of the musical theatre audition and cabaret repertoire well beyond the shows they originated in.
