About the artist
Jasleen Royal is an Indian singer-songwriter from Punjab who performs in Punjabi, Hindi, Gujarati and English, and has become one of the notable independent-turned-mainstream voices in Indian music. She first drew attention with her independent single «Panchi Ho Jaava», based on a poem by the late Punjabi poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi, which earned her recognition at the MTV Video Music Awards India.
She entered Bollywood playback singing in 2014 with «Preet» from the film Khoobsurat, composed by Sneha Khanwalkar, and has since built a career that moves between independent releases and film soundtracks. Her voice is often described as soft, airy and emotionally direct, well suited to both acoustic, folk-inflected pop and more polished Bollywood production.
Her catalogue includes widely heard songs such as «Kho Gaye Hum Kahan», «Ranjha», «Nachde Ne Saare», «Sang Rahiyo» and «Heeriye», tracks that blend contemporary pop sensibilities with Punjabi melodic traditions. Royal has built a reputation for combining an indie artist's songwriting sensibility with mainstream Hindi film music, making her one of the more distinctive crossover voices to emerge from the Indian independent scene into Bollywood.
