Jamiroquai

Jamiroquai is a British acid-jazz and funk band formed in London in 1992, built around the singular presence of frontman Jay Kay, its founder and only constant member. The group emerged from the early-1990s London acid-jazz scene, fusing funk, disco and soul grooves with elements of jazz and, on later records, electronic and dance production. Early singles carried the distinctive sound of a didgeridoo, played by original member Wallis Buchanan, and the band's name itself is a portmanteau blending «jam session» with a nod to Native American culture, a theme that also surfaces in the video for «Too Young to Die».

The band broke through internationally with the 1996 album Travelling Without Moving, whose single «Virtual Insanity» became one of the defining music videos of the decade and won multiple MTV awards. Further hits such as «Cosmic Girl», «Canned Heat», «Space Cowboy» and «Little L» cemented Jamiroquai as one of the most successful acts to come out of the UK's acid-jazz movement, later steering toward a slicker disco-funk sound on albums like A Funk Odyssey.

After a string of albums through the 2000s, the band returned in 2017 with Automaton, released nearly six and a half years after Rock Dust Light Star, showing a more electronic, synth-driven edge while retaining Jay Kay's falsetto and the group's signature groove. Jamiroquai remains known for elaborate live shows, Jay Kay's flamboyant stage presence and headwear, and a sound that helped keep funk and disco influences alive in mainstream pop through the 1990s and 2000s.
