James Cleveland

James Cleveland was one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century gospel music, widely honored as the King of Gospel. Born in Chicago and raised singing in church choirs, he built a career that fused traditional Black gospel with elements of soul, pop, and jazz, shaping what became the modern mass-choir sound. His arrangements for large choirs, full of dramatic dynamics and call-and-response, became a template that gospel artists and church choirs still draw on today.

Cleveland recorded prolifically, often leading combined church choirs on record, and songs like «Peace Be Still» became gospel standards, showcasing his ability to build slow-burning intensity into moments of overwhelming release. His catalog also includes «The Lord Is My Light», «Lord Do It», and «Praise God», tracks that reflect both his songwriting craft and his gift for arranging voices.

Beyond performing, Cleveland was a major institutional force in gospel, mentoring generations of singers and helping formalize gospel choir culture through organizations he helped establish. He died in 1991, but his influence remains audible in nearly every large gospel choir recording made since.
