About the artist
Indigo Girls are an American folk-rock duo formed by Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, who met as children in Decatur, Georgia, and began performing together in high school before reuniting at Emory University. Their close vocal harmonies, acoustic-guitar-driven arrangements, and songwriting that alternates between the two members' distinct voices — Ray's rawer, punk-inflected edge and Saliers' more polished, melodic sensibility — became their signature sound within the American folk-rock and roots-pop tradition.
After early independent releases, the duo signed to Epic Records and broke through with their 1989 self-titled album, anchored by the enduring hit «Closer to Fine», which remains their best-known song. Follow-up favorites like «Galileo», «Power of Two» and «Least Complicated» cemented their reputation for introspective, socially conscious lyricism paired with warm two-part harmonies.
Beyond music, Indigo Girls have long been recognized for activism on environmental, LGBTQ, Native American rights and anti-death-penalty causes, which has shaped their public identity as much as their catalog. Their influence is often cited among later folk and Americana-leaning pop-rock acts, and they remain active performers and recording artists decades into their career.
