Icehouse

Icehouse are an Australian rock band from Sydney, formed in 1977 by singer-songwriter Iva Davies under the name Flowers. Davies has remained the band's constant creative force, handling vocals, guitar, keyboards and production while working with a rotating cast of musicians. After early success as a pub-rock act, the group renamed itself Icehouse in 1981, taking the name from the cold flat Davies once lived in, and moved toward a new-wave and synth-pop sound that brought them acclaim across Australia, Europe and the United States.

Icehouse were pioneers in Australian pop of integrating early synthesizer and drum-machine technology, using instruments such as the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, the Linn drum machine and the Fairlight CMI to shape their layered, atmospheric production. This technological ambition combined with Davies's melodic songwriting to produce a string of hit singles, including «Great Southern Land», «Hey Little Girl», «Crazy» and «Electric Blue», alongside acclaimed albums such as Icehouse (1980), Primitive Man (1982) and Man of Colours (1987).

The band's blend of rock songwriting with synth-pop textures made them one of the defining Australian acts of the early 1980s, and their catalogue remains a touchstone for the country's new-wave era.
