i cani (also written I Cani) is the musical project of Italian singer-songwriter and producer Niccolò Contessa, from Rome. He founded the project in 2010 after playing bass in the band La Routine and being part of the electronic duo TAVRVS, initially releasing tracks such as «Wes Anderson» and «I pariolini di 18 anni» on SoundCloud and YouTube. Contessa deliberately chose a name with broad, open connotations rather than one tied to a specific image, and the project quickly became one of the defining voices of the Italian indie-pop revival of the early 2010s.

i cani's sound blends witty, literate, often ironic Italian lyrics with jangly guitar pop, post-punk rhythms and synth textures, drawing on influences from British indie and new wave while remaining rooted in a distinctly Roman, cinematic sensibility.
