Herms Niel

Herms Niel, born Ferdinand Friedrich Hermann Nielebock, was a German composer best known for military marches and songs written during the Nazi era. He became one of the most prominent composers of marching music in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, producing works that were widely performed by German military bands.

His best-known composition, «Erika», remains recognizable today, though largely because it resurfaced decades later as an internet meme, spreading its melody far beyond its original historical context and introducing it to audiences who often know nothing of its origin or composer. Other pieces such as «Ruck Zuck» belong to the same body of German march music from that period.

Niel's work sits outside conventional popular music genres, belonging instead to the tradition of European military and marching band music. His legacy is inseparable from the historical context in which his music was created and used, and his most famous piece continues to circulate today primarily through internet culture rather than through traditional performance.
