Hemant Kumar

Hemant Kumar, born Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay, was one of the most celebrated voices of Indian film music, active from the 1940s through the 1980s. Working across Bollywood (Hindi) and Bengali cinema, he was renowned both as a playback singer and as a music director, and his deep, warm baritone became one of the defining male voices of mid-20th-century Indian popular music.

In Hindi cinema he lent his voice to numerous classics, including songs such as «Jaane Woh Kaise Log The» and «Yaad Kiya Dil Ne», often composing the music himself for the films he sang in. In Bengali music he holds an even more central place, revered for his renditions of Rabindra Sangeet (songs by Rabindranath Tagore) such as «Tumi Robe Nirobe», alongside modern Bengali songs like «Chanchal Mon Anmona Hoy».

His career reflects a rare dual mastery: he could deliver the romantic, melancholic ballads that defined golden-age Hindi film music while also being one of the most respected interpreters of Tagore's songbook in Bengali culture. That combination gave him a lasting place in both Hindi and Bengali musical traditions, and his recordings remain widely referenced touchstones of Indian playback singing.
