About the artist

Harry Chapin (December 7, 1942 – July 16, 1981) was an American singer-songwriter celebrated for narrative, story-driven folk songs and for his tireless humanitarian work. Born in New York City, he sang in the Brooklyn Boys Choir alongside John Wallace, who became a lifelong collaborator, and often performed with his brothers Tom and Steve Chapin.

His 1972 debut album «Heads and Tales» introduced his signature song «Taxi», establishing the long-form storytelling style he became known for. He went on to record albums like «Sniper and Other Love Songs» and «Short Stories», but his best-remembered song is «Cat's in the Cradle», a poignant meditation on fatherhood and time that became a number-one hit and remains a staple of American folk-rock.

Beyond his music, Chapin devoted enormous energy to fighting world hunger, co-founding organizations dedicated to the cause and performing countless benefit concerts. He died in a car accident in 1981 at the age of 38, cutting short a career defined equally by his gift for vivid songwriting and his commitment to social causes — a combination that secured his lasting reputation as one of folk music's most humane voices.
