About the artist
Harry Belafonte (March 1, 1927 – April 25, 2023) was an American singer, actor, and civil rights activist widely credited with bringing Caribbean calypso music to a global audience. His 1956 album «Calypso», featuring the enduring hit «Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)», became one of the first LPs by a solo artist to reach massive commercial success in the United States.
Belafonte's voice combined warmth and theatrical charisma, moving easily between calypso, folk, blues, and American standards, with songs like «Jamaica Farewell», «Matilda», and «Mary's Boy Child» becoming holiday and pop staples. Beyond music, he built a notable film career, starring in «Carmen Jones» and «Island in the Sun», and became one of the first Black performers to achieve major crossover stardom in American entertainment.
He was also a close ally of Martin Luther King Jr. and a lifelong advocate for civil rights and humanitarian causes, later serving as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Belafonte's blend of artistic success and social commitment made him a singular figure whose influence extended far beyond the recording studio, shaping both the popularity of Caribbean music worldwide and the cultural conversation around race in America.
