Harris Jayaraj

Harris Jayaraj is an Indian film composer from Chennai who became one of the most prominent voices in Tamil cinema music from the late 1990s onward. Trained in a mix of Western and Indian musical idioms, he built his reputation on lush, melody-driven soundtracks that blend orchestral arrangements, electronic textures and Indian classical and folk elements.

He is best known for scoring soundtracks predominantly for Tamil films, working repeatedly with major Tamil directors and becoming a defining sound of Kollywood cinema in the 2000s, a period often seen as the peak of his commercial and critical success. His work is characterized by romantic, hook-heavy melodies alongside more experimental, rhythm-forward tracks, giving him range across love ballads and upbeat dance numbers within the same films.

While his core output remains Tamil, Jayaraj has also composed for a smaller number of Telugu films and two Hindi projects, extending his reach beyond the regional film industry where he made his name. His soundtracks are frequently cited among the benchmark works of contemporary South Indian film music, and his melodic sensibility has influenced a generation of Tamil film composers.
