Hannes Wader

Hannes Wader is a German singer-songwriter and one of the most influential figures in postwar German folk and protest music, active since the 1960s. Working in the Liedermacher tradition alongside contemporaries like Reinhard Mey and Franz Josef Degenhardt, he built his reputation on sparse, guitar-accompanied songs that combine poetic, often politically engaged lyrics with melodies drawn from German and international folk sources.

His best-known original, «Heute hier, morgen dort», became one of the defining songs of German folk music, prized for its wandering, wistful reflection on a itinerant life. Wader is equally known for his German-language interpretations of political and folk anthems, including a widely sung version of the Italian partisan song «Bella Ciao» and renditions of songs like «Die Internationale», «Trotz alledem», and «Die Moorsoldaten», linking him closely to the German left-wing and labor-movement song tradition.
