GUNSHIP

GUNSHIP are a London-based synthwave band formed by Dan Haigh and Alex Westaway, both formerly of the rock band Fightstar, together with drummer Alex Gingell. Emerging in the mid-2010s as the synthwave/retrowave revival was gathering momentum, the band built their sound around thick analog-style synthesizers, gated drums, cinematic melodies and a heavy debt to 1980s film scores, action-movie soundtracks and sci-fi aesthetics.

Their music leans unapologetically into nostalgia for that decade's pop culture, with tracks like «Tech Noir» directly referencing Terminator and instrumental, atmosphere-driven pieces such as «Dark All Day» and «Fly for Your Life» showcasing widescreen synth production paired with dramatic, often melancholic songwriting. The band frequently collaborates with guest vocalists and musicians drawn from the genre and beyond, and their videos and visual identity — steeped in retro sci-fi and horror imagery — are as central to their brand as the music itself. GUNSHIP occupy a prominent place in the synthwave scene, helping push the genre beyond its underground, internet-native origins toward wider live audiences and festival stages, while retaining the DIY, fan-driven aesthetic that defines the movement. Their catalog blends pop songcraft with instrumental synth-score pieces, giving the band range between accessible singles and more cinematic, soundtrack-like material.
