About the artist
Gülden Karaböcek, born Saniye Gülden Göktürk, is one of the pioneering names of Turkish arabesk and fantezi music. Raised and educated in Ankara, she trained in voice, music notation, and solfège at Ankara Radio before moving to Istanbul with her family, where she recorded her first single at only 14 or 15 years old, accompanied on bağlama by the celebrated Orhan Gencebay.
She initially released her early records under her birth name, Gülden Göktürk, but in 1972, following family tensions, she legally adopted the stage surname of her older sister, the well-known singer Neşe Karaböcek, through a court ruling. Across her career she experimented with different styles, but built her lasting fame within fantezi, the emotionally charged, orchestrally lush strand of Turkish popular song closely tied to arabesk. Songs such as «Dilek Taşı», «Sen Evlisin» and «Sürünüyorum» showcase her dramatic, melisma-rich vocal style set against sweeping string arrangements typical of the genre.
Tracks like «Özlüyorum», «Şimdi Artık El Oldun» and «Ara Beni Bul Beni» reflect the themes of longing, heartbreak, and betrayal central to fantezi and arabesk songwriting. As one of the genre's founding female voices, Karaböcek helped shape the emotional vocabulary of Turkish popular music in the 1970s and beyond.
