Grup Yorum

Grup Yorum is a Turkish music collective founded in 1985 that fuses folk (halk müziği) traditions with protest song. Known for a strongly left-wing political stance, the group positioned itself as a voice for the working class and oppressed communities, drawing on Anatolian folk melodies, saz-based instrumentation and choral group vocals combined with themes of social justice, freedom and resistance.

Throughout its history the band became emblematic of Turkey's protest-music scene, performing at mass rallies and gatherings that often carried explicit political meaning. Songs such as «Çav Bella», «Cemo» and «Haziranda Ölmek Zor» became widely sung anthems within left-leaning and Kurdish-Turkish solidarity circles alike.

The group's activity has repeatedly intersected with Turkey's turbulent political history: members faced state pressure, bans on performances, and arrests over the decades, yet the collective continued producing music and maintaining a loyal following, cementing its reputation as one of the most politically charged acts in modern Turkish music.
