Grouper

Grouper is the recording project of American musician Liz Harris, active since the mid-2000s. Her music blends hushed vocals, guitar and tape hiss into dense, blurred layers, placing her at the intersection of ambient, drone and lo-fi songwriting. Melodies often surface only partially through the haze, giving her records an intimate, half-remembered quality rather than conventional song structure.

Harris has released a large and consistent body of work, with albums such as Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill and the double album A I A: Alien Observer / Dream Loss standing among her most recognized. Her music is closely tied to the Kranky label's roster of experimental and drone artists, and she has also explored more stripped-down, piano-and-voice territory on later releases, showing a range beyond her earlier tape-saturated sound.
