Groundbreaking

Groundbreaking is an alternative music project created and led by Sean Harper, joined over the years by collaborators including David Cox and Gabriel Plannette. Launched in early 2012 as an electronic outlet after Harper's earlier work, the project moved through a range of styles centered on electro-industrial and electropop before arriving on streaming platforms in 2014.

The project found its widest audience through video game-inspired nerdcore songs and remixes built around popular indie titles such as Five Nights at Freddy's and Undertale, a wave of popularity that ran roughly from 2014 to 2017. After Harper announced a shift away from centering the project on fan-derived music, its focus broadened into more original alternative and industrial territory, with its audience narrowing somewhat as a result.

The 2021 album Parade marked a thematic culmination for Groundbreaking, leaning further into alt-metal and emo influences alongside inspiration from acts like Poppy and Bring Me the Horizon, signaling a more mature and personal direction for the project beyond its fandom-driven origins.
