Goran Bregović

Goran Bregović is a Bosnian-Herzegovinian composer, guitarist, and bandleader whose career began in the 1970s and 80s as leader of the Yugoslav rock band Bijelo Dugme, one of the most popular acts in the former Yugoslavia. After the band's split and the breakup of Yugoslavia, Bregović reinvented himself as a composer of Balkan brass and Gypsy-inflected orchestral music, best known internationally for his soundtracks to Emir Kusturica's films, including Time of the Gypsies and Underground.

His sound blends Balkan brass band instrumentation, Roma musical traditions, choral arrangements, and folk melodies with elements of rock and world music, performed with his ensemble the Wedding and Funeral Orchestra. Songs like Ederlezi and Kalašnjikov became widely known well beyond the Balkans through film and live performance, turning traditional and film-derived melodies into internationally recognizable pieces.

Bregović has collaborated across borders throughout his career, working with artists from Iggy Pop to various Balkan and world-music performers, and his music is frequently sampled or covered by other musicians. He remains one of the most internationally recognized figures to emerge from former Yugoslav popular and film music, credited with bringing Balkan brass sounds to global audiences.
