Girls' Generation (소녀시대)

Girls' Generation, also known as SNSD, is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment, debuting in 2007 with a self-titled Korean album. The lineup, originally nine members, settled at eight — Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun — after Jessica Jung's departure in 2014. Their 2009 single «Gee» became a cultural phenomenon in Korea and is widely credited with cementing their status, earning them the nickname «The Nation's Girl Group».

The group expanded into Japan in 2010, releasing a self-titled Japanese debut album that charted on the Oricon charts, and continued to release material in both markets throughout the 2010s. Their third Korean studio album «The Boys», released in 2011, became the best-selling album of that year in South Korea, and its title track was also released in an English version aimed at international audiences. Later releases such as «I GOT A BOY» and «All Night» showed the group experimenting with more maximalist, structurally unconventional pop production alongside their earlier, more classically melodic dance-pop sound.

Girls' Generation is regarded as one of the pillars of the K-pop industry's global rise in the late 2000s and 2010s, with a discography spanning bright, hook-driven dance-pop, R&B-inflected ballads, and electronic-pop experimentation, and members who have gone on to significant solo careers.
