Gipsy Kings

The Gipsy Kings are a group of flamenco, salsa and pop musicians from Arles and Montpellier in the south of France, performing in Andalusian Spanish. Though born in France, the members largely descend from gitanos, Spanish Roma families who fled Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s. The group originally performed under the name Los Reyes before adopting the Gipsy Kings moniker.

The band is widely credited with bringing Catalan rumba — a pop-inflected offshoot of traditional flamenco built on rapid, percussive guitar strumming — to international audiences, fusing it with elements of salsa and pop to create a sound that became a global phenomenon in the late 1980s and 1990s. Their music is instantly recognizable for its interlocking acoustic guitars, hand percussion and passionate, unison vocal harmonies.

Their catalogue includes both original compositions and reinterpretations of well-known songs delivered in their signature style, such as their flamenco-inflected versions of «Volaré (Nel blu, dipinto di blu)» and the «Hotel California (Spanish Mix)». Tracks like «Bamboléo» and «Djobi Djoba» remain among the most enduring examples of flamenco-pop crossing into mainstream Western pop culture.
