Gino Paoli

Gino Paoli, born 23 September 1934 in Monfalcone, Italy, is one of the founding figures of Italian cantautore songwriting, part of the influential Genoese scene alongside artists like Fabrizio De André and Luigi Tenco that reshaped Italian popular song in the late 1950s and 1960s. He built his reputation as both performer and writer, penning intimate, melodically refined songs that moved Italian pop away from formulaic melodrama toward personal, literary lyricism.

His best-known compositions, «Il cielo in una stanza» and «Sapore di sale», became defining standards of Italian music, admired for pairing spare, evocative imagery with understated, jazz-inflected melodies; «La gatta» and «Senza fine» further cemented his reputation for songs that felt intimate even at their most popular. He performed at the Sanremo Festival across six editions, including a celebrated guest appearance in 2014, and wrote extensively for film soundtracks and for other performers.
