Giacomo Puccini

Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) was an Italian composer and one of the towering figures of opera history, descended from a line of church musicians and composers in Lucca stretching back to the Baroque era. He studied at the Milan Conservatory, where his talent quickly drew attention, and achieved his first major success in 1893 with Manon Lescaut, followed by a string of masterpieces that cemented his fame across Europe and beyond.

Puccini stands as the last great representative of the Italian verismo tradition, bringing intense emotional realism, lush orchestration, and unforgettable melodic writing to the operatic stage. Works such as La bohème, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly combined dramatic intimacy with sweeping musical passion, giving voice to characters whose suffering and longing feel immediate even today. Arias like «Nessun dorma», «E lucevan le stelle», «O mio babbino caro», and «Vissi d'arte» remain among the most beloved pieces in the entire operatic repertoire.

His final opera, Turandot, was left unfinished at his death from complications following throat cancer, a consequence of his heavy smoking, and was completed by Franco Alfano. Puccini's music continues to be performed constantly on the world's great opera stages, and his melodies have crossed into popular culture through film, sports broadcasts, and countless recordings by opera and crossover artists alike.
