About the artist
Ghost Quartet is a song cycle created by composer Dave Malloy, performed by a core ensemble of Malloy alongside Brittain Ashford, Gelsey Bell and Brent Arnold. Rather than a conventional musical, it is a chamber piece for four voices and instruments — the performers double as their own band, playing piano, cello, autoharp and percussion live while singing.
The work weaves together several interlocking narratives across seven centuries: a photograph shop and a broken camera, two sisters caught in a story of jealousy and murder, a treehouse-dwelling astronomer, a bear, a subway platform, and the ghost of jazz pianist Thelonious Monk, all loosely tied together by themes of love, death and whiskey. Malloy's score draws on folk, blues, jazz and musical-theatre traditions, giving the piece a haunting, intimate, genre-blurring sound distinct from his more theatrically expansive work like Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.
Ghost Quartet premiered off-Broadway in 2014 and has since toured extensively, including runs in the Pacific Northwest, the American Northeast, and Scotland (notably at the Edinburgh Fringe). Its songs, including «Starchild», «Hero» and «Any Kind of Dead Person», are performed with a stripped-down, communal staging that invites audiences to sit close to the action, reinforcing the piece's ghost-story, campfire atmosphere.
